A UNIFORM
- School uniform must be worn to school and all school functions.
- When a girl is in uniform, she may not eat or drink in the street or hold hands with a boyfriend.
- Chewing gum is totally prohibited on the school premises and whenever a girl is in school or sports uniform.
- All items of uniform must be marked with the learner’s name.
- Whether the uniform is summer or winter, it must be complete, e.g. black tights may not be worn with the summer uniform.
- No make-up is permitted.
- Nails must be short & neat. No nail varnish (including French manicures).
BLAZER
- The school blazer must have a pocket badge.
- The blazer need not be worn in summer, but is compulsory with the winter uniform.
- If the jersey is worn, the blazer must be worn as well. This rule also applies to the matric white pullover
(the blazer must be the top garment.).
SKIRT
- The skirt must have 6 panels.
- Length: not more than 5cm above the knee.
- Skirts may not be rolled up.
HAIR
- Hair should be neat and well groomed
(all hair accessories are available in the school shop).
- Hair may not be obviously tinted, highlighted or permed.
- Hair must be combed neatly down. Teased, sprayed hair that stands upright is completely unacceptable.
- Shoulder length hair should be tied back.
- Only black clips and hair bands.
- Neat, narrow braids of even length may be worn. These braids must be the same colour as one’s hair and must be tied back.
- ‘Knots’ or ‘dreadlocks’ may not be worn.
ACCESSORIES
- Every girl should wear a house badge and she may wear a GHS lapel badge and a badge indicating her membership of a school sport or cultural group (these badges are available from the school).
- Every girl MUST wear a name tag whilst she is at school; name tags are provided by the school; must be purchased if lost.
- Only school badges may be worn on the lapel of the blazer.
- No jewellery other than a plain wristwatch, a single pair of small, plain, silver or gold, stud earrings may be worn on pierced earlobes, and a Medic Alert or SOS disc or bracelet if required.
- An earring may not be worn in one ear only.
- Only black sunshades/umbrellas allowed.
- Beanies may be worn in cold weather (June to August), but must be the standard beanie available at the GHS shop. Beanies may not be worn during school assemblies.
- A white scarf (knitted in 4-ply) may be worn by 1st team (U19) players in winter.
- Shoulder bags which can accommodate cell phones, calculators etc are available at the uniform shop. These may be worn at school.
- 1st Team jackets way be worn on Fridays and June exams.
- Matric Jackets may be worn on Wednesdays & during the June & September exams.
- No i-pods to be used in school uniform.
B SCHOOL ROUTINE
1. ARRIVING & LEAVING
- Girls brought to school by car or public transport must be dropped off at the Lodge Road or Rendlesham Road side of the school, i.e. the back of the school. Girls may not be dropped off in front of the school (Elsmere Road).
- Girls may not enter or leave the school through the front door.
- Cyclists must bring their bicycles into the quad; the bicycle must be securely locked to the stand. Parents are advised to have their daughters’ bicycles adequately insured and to supply good quality locks.
- Motorbikes must be parked on the premises.
- Girls must walk on the pavements to and from school. Under no circumstances may girls walk in a group in the road.
- Girls must keep their voices down and not disturb the neighbourhood when walking to and from school
- learners waiting at school for afternoon activities should wait in the gardens, or in Room 3.
- No sitting on pavements is allowed; girls must wait inside the school grounds.
- No eating whilst waiting to be fetched.
2. BEGINNING OF DAY
- When the bell rings at 7:30 all girls must report to their register class for register.
- During register periods instructions from the RCL members must be obeyed by girls in all grades.
3. BETWEEN CLASSES
- When moving from one part of the school to another, girls should walk in single file, on the left, and keep quiet.
- Girls from Grades 8 - 11 use only the paths and the verandahs; only Matrics may walk across the lawns.
4. BREAKS
- Girls from Grades 8-12 may use the verandahs and the pergola area at breaks.
- Lawns in the quads are reserved for the Matrics.
- Girls may not be in classrooms or passages in Laboratory/Computer Centre area during breaks.
- Rubbish must be placed in the bins provided.
- Areas out of bounds:-
- Front of office block and staffroom.
- Behind Art Room & AV Room.
- Beyond Music Rooms and Tennis Courts.
- At the end of break girls are required to line up at their classes in an orderly fashion as quickly as possible.
- At the tuckshop:-
- No shouting out.
- Line up to be served.
- Only four girls at a time in front of the serving hatch.
- Tthe verandah side is reserved for Grades 10, 11 & 12.
5. SUBJECT ROOMS
- Books required for the day must be brought to school and carried from class to class.
- Girls should sit in the same desk for each lesson.
- Nothing on a teacher’s desk may be touched.
- Textbooks and library books are the property of the school.
- Books lost or damaged must be paid for.
- Textbooks must be covered.
- No writing on chalkboard by learners, except for authorised notices.
- Defacing of desks and walls will be dealt with most severely.
- There is a total ban on the use of Tipp-Ex in the school.
- Cleaning of chalkboard dusters should be done with a ruler and not on doors or doorposts.
- No girls may be in classrooms at breaks, except during wet weather.
- Eating allowed only at breaks, and never in classrooms.
- Any girl needing to be excused from class must carry a card from the teacher which authorises her absence from class.
6. LIBRARY
- Cases may not be taken into the library.
- Books may only be taken from the library if they have been signed out.
- Newspapers and magazines must be handled with care to avoid damaging them. They may not be cut or defaced.
- Eating in the library is strictly forbidden.
- A photocopier is kept in the library for the learners’ convenience. Copies may be made during breaks & designated afternoons. Only librarians may operate the photocopier. A fee is charged for this service.
C SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
1. ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL
- If a girl is absent from school, a telephone call should be made to the school by 08:00 on the first morning of her absence.
- For any period of absence she should bring a letter to her Register Teacher, confirming the initial telephone call.
- A medical certificate is required for a period of more than 3 days.
- Should a pupil’s school attendance be unsatisfactory, a medical certificate may be required for all further absenteeism.
- Absence during examinations and for cycle tests ALWAYS requires a medical certificate.
- Parents are asked to avoid making any appointments (doctor, dentist, driver's licence) during school hours. Prior arrangements must be made by the parents for late arrival or early departure. Should there be an occasion that an appointment is made in the morning, parents must fetch their daughter from school. No girls are allowed to be seen walking around in school uniform during the school day.
- If a girl is sick during the morning she should ask her teacher for a note, at the beginning of the period, and then go to her respective Discipline Head & then to the School Secretary, who will telephone a parent to fetch her.
- The Secretary will not administer medicine to the girls.
2. DIARIES, HYMN BOOKS
- Every girl must have a homework diary and a school hymn book/song sheet which can be purchased from the school shop.
3. NAME TAGS & BADGES
- The wearing of a name tag (supplied by the school) and House badge is compulsory.
4. SCHOOL SONG
- Every girl is expected to know the words of the school song within three weeks of becoming a learner of the school.
5. TELEPHONE
- A pay phone and a card phone are situated in the quad which are solely for outgoing calls.
- Phone cards can be purchased from the school shop.
- Phone calls may only be made at breaks or before and after school.
- The telephones in the administrative section may not be used by girls.
6. ANNOUNCEMENTS
- If a girl needs to have a notice read to the whole school, she must hand it in at the Secretary’s office before school; notices may not be announced in the hall after the staff have left. Girls may not go from class to class with notices.
- On non-Assembly days announcements will be made at the end of Register period.
- Announcements will be made at the beginning of breaks and at the end of each day.
7. VALUABLES
- All valuables e.g. cameras, money in excess of R50-00 etc. must be handed in at the front office before the end of register. The school cannot be held responsible for any loss resulting from a breach of this regulation.
- Lockers can be rented at a nominal fee from the GHS Shop.
- Cellphones must be invisible and inaudible during the school day. If a cellphone rings or beeps, or if a learner is seen operating her cellphone during the school day, the cellphone will be confiscated. Confiscated cellphones will be returned at the end of that specific term, unless the learner wants her cellphone before then. In that case the cellphone will be returned after the payment of a R100 fine. The school cannot take responsibility for cellphones at school.
- No cellphones are allowed in exam venues.
- Secure pigeon size lockers for the safety of cellphones during school hours are available.
- Shoulder bags which can accommodate cellphones, calculators, etc., are available at the uniform shop. These may be worn at school
